Assessment of the Performance of Phasor-Based and Transients-Based Faulted Phase Identification Techniques in the Presence of Inverter Interfaced Resources

Faulted phase identification is one of the segments conventional system protection that severely vulnerable in presence inverter-based resources (IBR) such as Type IV wind and solar PV power plants. The work presented this paper investigates effect IBRs on phasor-based faulted methods widely implemented contemporary commercial relays using theoretical analysis simulation results. Moreover, premise further validated by testing line hardware-in-the-loop simulations. This also evaluates applicability recently proposed transients/incremental quantities-based techniques to overcome deficiencies correctly identify systems with through real-time control Comparisons show transient/incremental are more suitable for a high penetration IBRs.
